When I Heard the Learn’d Astronomer
by Walt Whitman
from Leaves of Grass, 1855
WHEN I heard the learn’d astronomer;
When the proofs, the figures, were ranged in columns before me;
When I was shown the charts and the diagrams, to add, divide, and measure them;
When I, sitting, heard the astronomer, where he lectured with much applause in the lecture-room,
How soon, unaccountable, I became tired and sick;
Till rising and gliding out, I wander’d off by myself,
In the mystical moist night-air, and from time to time,
Look’d up in perfect silence at the stars.
I’m an astronomy educator, writer, documentary producer, and former digital planetarium director. The exciting pace of astronomy discovery has inspired me to fulfill a dream, and leave my career as a planetarian, and return to school full time for astrophysics at the University of Cincinnati, diving headfirst into the golden age of astronomical discovery we are so lucky to be living through right now. I firmly believe in the power that learning about the Universe can have in our lives. Through the written word, filmmaking, and the digital media explosion, I think the discoveries of science can inspire a great many people, and act as a powerful force to change the world for the better. Hey, at the very least, it may inspire the sales of many great science books and populate cubicles everywhere with cool toys.
I also love me some great music, and am the founder of Aural Moon internet radio (as seen in your ITunes Radio directory), one of the oldest internet radio stations in existence anywhere on the planet for evermore time into infinity plus one. If you like progressive rock, jazz fusion, avant garde, and ambient artists, and music that makes your eyebrows Spock-out, there’s a whole amazing community of people all over the world there waiting to meet you!
I currently live with my lovely, amazing and inspiring wife in the green hills of Cincinnati, Ohio. Yes, it’s true, we eat tofu and seaweed.
